Common Core Resources

It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that we will beginimplementing a new set of standards, the Montana Common Core StateStandards (CCSS), in 2012! These standards were developed from theCommon Core State Standards, an initiative of the National Governors’Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Theirleadership helped to define the knowledge and skills students shouldattain during their K-12 education in the 21st century. Ultimately, thepurpose for implementing the CCSS is so that all students graduate highschool with skills prepared to succeed in college and the workplace.

These standards inform schools regarding "what" to teach. The"art" of teaching remains in the hands of our talented staff. Teacherswill emphasize reading more informational and complex texts. Inaddition, students will practice writing to justify thinking as well asreasoning and writing for more authentic purposes. In general, studentswill participate in more problem solving and problem-based learning. Weanticipate that the implementation of the CCSS will allow our studentsto experience more "real world," relevant connections. Your child’sclassroom will be an even more engaging setting as students are providedwith increased opportunities for collaboration, conversation, criticalthinking and problem solving.

We have been working closely with school leaders and staff toprepare for the changes ahead as well as developing resources that willbe of support to families. A brief introduction to Common CoreStandards for each grade level follows below. You will also find gradelevel guides and links to state and national organizations to help youunderstand these important changes to curriculum, instruction, andassessment.

We hope you find this information useful. If you have anyquestions, please don’t hesitate to talk with your child’s teachers, asthey will be able to describe the curriculum and instruction associatedwith your child’s specific grade level. We look forward to supportingyour child’s education with high quality instruction and working withyou in the coming school year as we implement the CCSS. In the spiritof our Core Purpose: "Bozeman Public Schools exist to provide anoutstanding education that inspires and ensures high achievement soevery student can succeed and make a difference in a rapidly changingworld community."
